One might wish to create two folders in a file system structure, but with tags you can have overlap between the two by applying two tags to a single file (rather than duplicating the file across multiple folders). Say I had a family tag and a marriage photos tag. With tags you can tag it as you would name a folder but there is never a duplicate, and its much easier to create branches than say the folder method. Ever have folders with the same content? The old way you could use symbolic links to avoid duplicates (and therefore copies of files but with differing data), but you'd still have to manually create them with each new folder where you want crossover (and delete them!).
